Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Outpatient (OP) Coding Trainer to develop, deliver, and evaluate training programs for outpatient medical coders. The ideal candidate has extensive hands-on coding experience in Emergency Department (ED), Same Day Surgery (SDS), and Observation (OBS) coding, along with a strong background in training, coaching, and quality improvement. This role is responsible for ensuring coders achieve and maintain high levels of coding accuracy, productivity, and compliance with industry standards. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and facilitate instructor-led and virtual training programs for outpatient medical coders. Deliver comprehensive training on Emergency Department (ED), Same Day Surgery (SDS), and Observation (OBS) coding, including ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and coding guidelines. Conduct onboarding training for new hires and ongoing education for existing coders. Assess trainee performance through coding exercises, knowledge assessments, and competency evaluations. Provide individualized coaching and feedback to improve coding accuracy, productivity, and overall performance. Develop and maintain training materials, job aids, reference guides, and standard operating procedures. Stay current with annual coding updates, payer regulations, CMS guidelines, and industry best practices, incorporating changes into training content. Partner with Quality Assurance, Operations, and Coding Leadership to identify knowledge gaps and implement targeted training initiatives. Support quality improvement efforts by analyzing audit findings and creating action plans to address recurring coding errors. Track training effectiveness and maintain records of attendance, assessments, and competency results. Serve as a subject matter expert for outpatient coding and provide guidance on coding-related questions from trainees and operations teams. Ensure all training programs align with organizational policies, client requirements, and regulatory compliance standards. Qualifications Active CPC and COC certification required. Minimum of 5 years of Outpatient (OP) medical coding experience , including: Emergency Department (ED) Same Day Surgery (SDS) Observation (OBS) Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Coding Trainer, Educator, Coach, or Learning & Development Specialist in a healthcare or revenue cycle environment. Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, CMS guidelines, NCCI edits, and payer-specific coding requirements. Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or similar platforms. Proficiency with coding encoder tools (e.g., 3M Encoder, TruCode, EncoderPro) is preferred. Excellent presentation, facilitation, coaching, and communication skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on continuous improvement. Ability to manage multiple training initiatives while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Skills Experience creating e-learning modules, training curricula, and competency assessments. Background in coding audits or quality assurance is an advantage. Experience supporting large-scale onboarding, upskilling, or transition programs. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and virtual training platforms.
